The following represents areas of continuing education to further evolve this effort.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Autonomous Vehicles Cyclists/Motorcycles/Scooters
AI is an ever evolving new technology that will have a yet to be determined impact on pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle safety. When one gets into an autonomous vehicle in the future, they must be educated on safety precautions. These are fluid in nature, as autonomous vehicles have not been fully rolled out as acceptable transit. However, it is being discussed as part of an overall transit process in the first mile last mile process, as has bike share and scooter share. These all require education.
Engineering of Roads
There is current legislation coming from the State of Maryland to include managed lanes around the Capitol Beltway (I-495). This newly proposed way of travel will necessitate some tailoring of travel for vehicles, and will likely have unknown impacts on roadway safety.
Dedicated Bus Lanes/Increase in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)
Studies have shown that there is an increase incidence of pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle crashes with passenger vehicles of 15 or more. These are increasingly the most efficient and inexpensive solutions to metro rail transit and will likely have a cultural impact on future travel and connectivity.
Transit
Metro Rail extension and potential for future trains, as well as the Japanese-based MagLev (magnet levitation) trains that are currently being proposed between Baltimore and Washington, DC.
Bridge Construction and Vehicle Safety
There are multiple bridges going over waterways within the region, which has some elements of distraction and resulting accidents. There should be specific education related to driving over bridges.
Senior Citizen Continuing Education
Many drivers on the roads today are operating vehicles as they did when they were licensed 30+ years ago. Since many have received their licenses, there are more distractions in vehicles, as well as outside of vehicles as technology has evolved. It is important to tailor education of new features and distractions. We have partnered with AARP and Car Fit to address continuing education for senior citizen drivers.
School Presentations
Educate student bodies on road use safety that includes walking to school, school bus safety (with emphasis on the meaning of the different colored flashing lights and the retractable stop sign), violations, and laws for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
