Change the Driving Culture and Save Lives in the DMV.
#DRIVINGITHOME was launched as a pilot by Founder, Monique Anderson-Walker in February 2019 to address the epidemic of crashes involving vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists on the roads in Prince George’s County, MD. Through partnerships, presentations, educational programs and viral appeals in the pilot program, the community provided positive feedback and has inspired the proposed expanded project.
#DrivingItHome was created in response to a series of tragic and deadly accidents on Maryland Route 210/Indian Head Highway, US 301/Crain Highway, and Route 1 in College Park.
What these tenets say is that essentially, everyone in a vehicle has a role and responsibility. Everyone, whether in the front or back seats are to fasten their seatbelts, as soon as they enter the vehicle and before the car ignition is even started.
The person sitting in the front passenger’s seat is to act as the co-pilot and assist the driver by keeping them aware of the speed limit, focused, awake and keeping their head on a swivel to anticipate pedestrians, bikes and other vehicles.
NO ONE in the vehicle should introduce any distractions including, showing texts, changing the radio or any activity that may take the driver’s focus off the road.
Those seated in the back seat should not distract the driver, and should ALWAYS wear their seatbelts.
VISUAL. Removing your eyes and full attention from the road.
MANUAL. Removing a hands from the steering wheel.
COGNITIVE. Losing concentration.
